ABSTRACT

Agroforestry systems are examples of soil exploration that is closer to the natural form of the forest, with intercropping of several species within an area, thus being sustainable alternatives. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the weed community in agroforestry systems in two ecosystems: solid ground and floodplain in the state of Pará. Such collections were made in eight areas, with about one hectare each, cultivated in agroforestry systems, four of which are on dry land and four on floodplains, in the rural area of Cametá-PA. Four plots of one square meter per area were randomly sampled, where the species were identified, counted, and taken to weigh to evaluate the weed community. Among the evaluated environments, the species that stood out the most in the solid ground environment was Kyllinga brevifolia, leading most of the evaluated indices. In the lowland ecosystem, the Brachiaria species purpuracens were the most relevant.

ABSTRACT

RESUMO A industrialização da agricultura e da pecuária, além de gerar um ambiente propício à disseminação de agentes infecciosos, é responsável pelo uso generalizado de diversas substâncias tóxicas que afetam a saúde humana, animal e ambiental. O objetivo deste estudo foi promover a reflexão sobre o uso de agrotóxicos e medicamentos veterinários como elementos de debate na construção da Saúde Única. Para isso, foi realizada uma revisão exploratória literária de artigos, livros e documentos oficiais disponíveis em plataformas de banco de dados. A discussão inclui as problemáticas do uso de substâncias tóxicas em plantas e animais. Aborda, também, como os resíduos oriundos de sua utilização impactam a qualidade de alimentos, ar, solo, água com consequências à saúde humana. Embora essa discussão seja escassa na temática de Saúde Única, é fundamental que, além da participação da sociedade civil organizada, gestores públicos assegurem, por meio de políticas públicas, maior segurança e controle na utilização de substâncias tóxicas na agricultura e na pecuária.


ABSTRACT The industrialization of agriculture and livestock, in addition to generating an environment conducive to the spread of infectious agents, is responsible for the widespread use of various toxic substances that affect human, animal, and environmental health. This study aims to promote reflections on the use of pesticides and veterinary drugs as elements of debate in the construction of One Health. For that, an exploratory literature review of articles, books, and official documents available on database platforms was carried out. The discussion includes the problems of the use of toxic substances in plants and animals. It also addresses how the waste arising from its use impacts the quality of food, air, soil, and water, with consequences for human health. Although this discussion is scarce on the theme of One Health, it is essential that, in addition to the participation of organized civil society, public managers ensure, through public policies, greater security and control in the use of toxic substances in agriculture and livestock.

ABSTRACT

Resumen Introducción: Los servicios ecosistémicos (SE) de provisión suministrados por los agroecosistemas de huertos familiares (AEHF) se refieren a los beneficios tangibles que las personas obtienen del ecosistema. Aunque los AEHF, han sido ampliamente estudiados, pocos son los trabajos que evidencian su abordaje desde una perspectiva integral, la cual incorpore características biofísicas y económicas al mismo tiempo. Objetivo: Realizar un análisis integral los servicios ecosistémicos de provisión suministrados por agroecosistemas de huertos familiares del Estado de México. Métodos: Se recopilo información sobre los SE de provisión (identificación, usos, destinos y generación de ingresos) mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas, cuestionarios, inventarios de especies, observaciónes directas, y recorridos en campo entre Marzo a Diciembre de 2019 en tres comunidades rurales, con la participación de 42 familias propietarias de los huertos familiares. Resultados: Se identificaron un total de seis SE de provisión asociados a 212 especies, las cuales fueron distribuidas en 172 géneros y 82 familias. Los Principales usos que los propietarios de los huertos dieron a los SE de provisión fueron ornamentales (51 %), seguidos de los alimenticios (39 %) y medicinales (32 %), donde especies como Cymbopogon citratus, Persea americana, Punica granatum, Zea mays e Inga jinicuil, tuvieron los mayores valores de uso (V. U. = 4). El destino de la producción fue autoconsumo, venta e intercambio; siendo el primero, la principal estrategia de sobrevivencia utilizada por los hogares. La venta de productos comestibles en fresco, así como de sus derivados represento ingresos brutos promedio de 1 333.47 USD/año para los propietarios de los huertos familiares. Conclusiones: Los servicios ecosistémicos de provisión proporcionados por los huertos familiares son vistos como una fuente importante de recursos, los cuales permiten satisfacer necesidades múltiples de los hogares rurales, catalogados en pobreza extrema.


Abstract Introduction: Provisioning ecosystem services (ES) provided by agroecosystems of family orchards (AEFO) refer to the tangible benefits that people obtain from the ecosystem. Although AEFO have been widely studied, few studies show their approach from an integral perspective, which incorporates biophysical and economic characteristics at the same time. Objective: To carry out an integral analysis of provisioning ecosystem services provided by agroecosystems of family orchards from State of Mexico. Methods: Information about provisioning ecosystem services (identification, uses, destination and income generation) were collected between March to December 2019 from three rural communities by involving 42 families with a family orchard using semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, species inventories, direct observation and field trips. Results: A sum of six provisioning ecosystem services were identified, which were associated to 212 species, distributed in 172 genera and 82 families. The main uses that the owners of the orchards gave to provisioning ES were ornamental (51 %), followed by food (39 %) and medicinal (32 %), where species such as Cymbopogon citratus, Persea americana, Punica granatum, Zea mays e Inga jinicuil, had the highest use values (U. V. = 4). The destination of the production was self-consumption, sale and exchange, being the first the main survival strategy used by households. Sale of edible products in fresh, as well as their derivatives, represented an average gross income of 1 333.47 USD/year for the owners of the family orchards. Conclusions: Provisioning ecosystem services provided by family orchards seen as an important source of resources, which allow the households of rural communities classified in extreme poverty to cover multiple needs.

ABSTRACT Cotton is an alternative host for Edessa meditabunda (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), especially after the soybean harvest in surrounding areas, when large numbers of insects invade cotton fields and damage reproductive structures such as flowers and developing bolls. However, no studies on its occurrence and spatial distribution have been conducted in cotton. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess the temporal variation and spatial distribution of E. meditabunda in the alternative host plant, Gossypium hirsutum. The study was carried out in an area of 1.1 ha planted with cotton that was divided in 64 plots of 169 m2 each, where entire cotton plants were examined weekly and E. meditabunda nymphs and adults were counted. Dispersion rates and theoretical frequency distributions were calculated and analyzed with significance level at 5%. Assessments were carried out from seedling emergence until the appearance of bolls, but E. meditabunda was present only during the reproductive stage of cotton plants. This study detected the dispersal of this stink bug from late-cycle soybean fields to cotton, indicating cotton's potential as an alternative host plant, providing shelter and food. Based on aggregation indices, the spatial distribution of nymphs and adults in cotton was aggregated at the beginning of the infestation, but tended toward randomness as bolls reached maturity. The occurrence of E. meditabunda in cotton was best described by the Poisson distribution with significance level at 5%.

ABSTRACT

The common opossum, Didelphis marsupialis thrives near human settlements. Understanding its ecology could help planning management decisions about this species, especially in anthropogenic landscapes. Yet, there are no density estimations for this species throughout its distribution range in Bolivia. We estimated the density of D. marsupialis in a rural agricultural community, where agroforestry plantations and fallows cover most of the land. We counted individuals in line transects and used DISTANCE software to calculate density. We covered a total of 70.21 km in 143 night counts, obtaining 38 records of D. marsupialis. We estimated a density of 0.30 individuals ha-1 (SE = 0.062; range: 0.20 - 0.45 individuals ha-1), with a mean encounter rate of 0.54 individuals km-1. Encounter rate varied between habitats, with mean values of 0.20 in secondary forests and 0.64 in agroforestry plantations. Our density estimate is near the lower range of previously reported values for the common opossum in other countries. We argue that our results may reflect the response to the availability of food resources and predation pressure in agroforestry plantations. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Ichneumonidae are solitary parasitoids that mainly attack larvae and pupae of Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Hymenoptera, which constitute important agricultural pests. The objective of the present paper was to characterize the assemblage of Ichneumonidae associated to the conventional and organic cultivation of Guarana (Paullinia cupana) crop in Manaus City (Amazonas State, Brazil) with faunistic analysis. The samples were collected at Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA), using Malaise and Moericke traps, between September 2012 and February 2013. We collected 296 specimens of Ichneumonidae, represented by 14 subfamilies, 41 genera and 63 morphospecies. The faunistic analysis revealed the predominance of rare and less frequent genera (54.2% in conventional and 47.1% in organic crop management). Venturia Schrottky was highlighted as superabundant, super frequent and constant (46.4% of the specimens) in conventional cultivation. In organic cultivation, Eiphosoma Cresson (15.6% of the specimens), Venturia (15.1%), Polycyrtidea Viereck (7%), Stethantyx Townes (6%), Enicospilus Stephens and Diapetimorpha Viereck (both 5.5%), Polycyrtus Spinola and Podogaster Brullé (both 5%) were more abundant, more frequent and constant. The observed differences reflect the type of crop management. Considering that organic crop management do not use agrochemicals, there is a greater diversification of the landscape. On the other hand, a reduction in richness and abundance has been observed in conventional crop management, due to its greater alteration and uniformity of the landscape. This study evidences a high number of rare, less frequent and accidental genera, and reveals the predominant groups in each crop cultivation system.(AU)


Ichneumonidae são parasitoides solitários e atacam principalmente larvas e pupas de Lepidoptera, Coleoptera e Hymenoptera, que constituem importantes pragas agrícolas. O objetivo do trabalho foi caracterizar a assembleia de Ichneumonidae associada ao cultivo de guaraná (Paullinia cupana) de manejo convencional e orgânico, em Manaus (Amazonas, Brasil) por meio de análise faunística. As coletas foram realizadas na EMBRAPA, com o uso de armadilhas Malaise e Moericke, entre setembro de 2012 e fevereiro de 2013. Foram coletados 296 exemplares de Ichneumonidae, em 14 subfamílias, 41 gêneros e 63 morfoespécies. A análise faunística revelou predominância de gêneros raros e pouco frequentes (54,2% no manejo convencional e 47,1% no orgânico). Venturia Schrottky destacou-se no manejo convencional como superabundante, superfrequente e constante (46,4% dos exemplares). No manejo orgânico, Eiphosoma Cresson (15,6% dos exemplares), Venturia (15,1%), Polycyrtidea Viereck (7%), Stethantyx Townes (6%), Enicospilus Stephens e Diapetimorpha Viereck (ambos 5,5%), Polycyrtus Spinola e Podogaster Brullé (ambos 5%) foram muito abundantes, muito frequentes e constantes. As diferenças observadas refletem o tipo de manejo da cultura. No manejo orgânico, por não utilizar agroquímicos, há uma maior diversificação da paisagem. Já no manejo convencional há uma redução da riqueza e abundância, por possuir maior perturbação e uniformidade da paisagem. Este estudo evidenciou o elevado número de gêneros raros, pouco frequentes e acidentais e expôs os grupos predominantes em cada sistema de manejo.(AU)

Resumen El artículo muestra los resultados del estudio cuyo propósito es divulgar la experiencia de la transferencia y apropiación tecnológica del modelo de utilidad en la siembra bajo invernadero mediante la aplicación de la metodología investigación social, caso El Edén de Cris, corregimiento de La Elvira, período 2012 - 2016. Los resultados revelan que al aplicar la metodología en el proyecto, se logró la transferencia tecnológica, la apropiación y adopción de siembra bajo invernadero por medio de un modelo de utilidad; sin embargo, la continuidad del proyecto involucrando más productores agrícolas generaría un impacto socioeconómico en la localidad. El modelo de utilidad permitió aplicar nuevas formas de producción agrícola a través de las Unidades Productivas Agrícolas Sostenibles, la réplica a más productores podría contribuir a disminuir las brechas de exclusión social e inequidad existentes en la localidad de la Elvira, reconfigurar el territorio a partir del diseño de un micro-circuito productivo sostenible con el agroecosistema, mediante la construcción social de relaciones productivas en redes de productores rurales. Abstract This article shows the results of the study whose purpose is to disseminate the experience of the transfer and technological appropriation of the utility model in greenhouse sowing through the application of the social research methodology. El Edén de Cris case, corregimiento of the Elvira, period 2012 - 2016. The results revealsthat when applying the methodology in the project, the technological tranfer appropriation and adoption of sowing under greenhouse was achieved through a utility model; however the continuity of the project involving more agricultural producers would generate a socioeconomic impact in the town.The utility model allowed the application of new forms of agricultural production through the Sustainable Agricultural Productive Units, the replication of more producers could contribute to reducing the gaps of social exclusion and inequality existing in the town of Elvira, reconfiguring the territory from design of a sustainable productive micro-circuit with agroecosystems, through the social construction of forms of productive relations in networks of rural producers. Resumo O artigo apresenta os resultados do estudo, cujo objetivo é disseminar a experiência da transferência e apropriação tecnológica do modelo de utilidade na semeadura em estufa através da aplicação da metodologia de pesquisa social, caso El Edén de Cris, corregimiento (é usado na Colômbia para definir um tipo de subdivisão da área rural dos diferentes municípios do país) de La Elvira, período de 2012 - 2016. Os resultados revelam que, ao aplicar a metodologia no projeto, a transferência tecnológica, a apropriação e a adoção da semeadura em casa de vegetação foram realizadas por meio de um modelo de utilidade; no entanto, a continuidade do projeto envolvendo mais produtores agrícolas geraria um impacto socioeconómico na localidade. O modelo de utilidade permitiu a aplicação de novas formas de produção agrícola por meio das Unidades Produtivas Agrícolas Sustentáveis, a replicação de mais produtores poderia contribuir para reduzir as lacunas de exclusão social e desigualdade existentes no corregimiento de La Elvira, reconfigurando o território de projeto de um microcircuito produtivo sustentável com agroecossistemas, através da construção social de relações Produtivas Em Redes De Produtores Rurais. Resumen Con el objetivo de conocer la diversidad de especies y variedades manejadas a nivel de finca por los agricultores de 2 municipios del Valle del Cauca, Colombia y el uso que las familias le dan a estas, se realizaron inventarios de agrobiodiversidad y se estimaron índices de riqueza y abundancia de dichas especies. Se evaluaron siete fincas de las veredas El Diamante, Alto del Oso y San Pablo en el Municipio de Restrepo y dos fincas en los corregimientos Fenicia y Puerto Fenicia, en el Municipio de Riofrío. Los inventarios e índices evaluados en los dos municipios muestran que existe gran riqueza y abundancia específica, y que no hay especies dominantes. Los inventarios de agrobiodiversidad y la aplicación de índices se deben constituir como herramientas indispensables para el diseño de la estructura de los sistemas sostenibles como clara estrategias para la mitigación al cambio climático basados en el uso y manejo de la agrobiodiversidad local y la generación de medios de vida para los agricultores, y como aporte para la seguridad y soberanía alimentaria.


Abstract With the objective of knowing the diversity of species and varieties managed at the farm level by the farmers of 2 municipalities of Valle del Cauca, Colombia and the use that families give them, agrobiodiversity inventories were carried out and wealth indices were estimated and abundance of these species. Seven farms of the El Diamante, Alto del Oso and San Pablo villages in the Municipality of Restrepo and two farms in the Fenicia and Puerto Fenicia districts, in the Municipality of Riofrío were evaluated. The inventories and indices evaluated in the two municipalities show that there is great wealth and specific abundance, and that there are no dominant species. Agrobiodiversity inventories and the application of indexes should be constituted as indispensable tools for the design of the structure of sustainable systems as clear strategies for climate change mitigation based on the use and management of local agrobiodiversity and the generation of means of life for farmers, and as a contribution to food security and sovereignty


Resumo Com o objetivo de conhecer a diversidade de espécies e variedades manejadas no nível da fazenda pelos agricultores de 2 municípios de Valle del Cauca, Colômbia e o uso que as familias lhes dão, foram realizados inventários de agrobiodiversidade e estimados índices de riqueza e abundância dessas espécies. Foram avaliadas sete fazendas das aldeias El Diamante, Alto del Oso e San Pablo no município de Restrepo e duas fazendas nos distritos de Fenicia e Puerto Fenicia, no município de Riofrío. Os inventários e índices avaliados nos dois municípios mostram que há grande riqueza e abundância específica e que não existem espécies dominantes. Os inventários de agrobiodiversidade e a aplicação de índices devem ser constituídos como ferramentas indispensáveis para o desenho da estrutura de sistemas sustentáveis, como estratégias claras para a mitigação das mudanças climáticas, baseadas no uso e gestão da agrobiodi-versidade local e na geração de meios de vida para os agricultores e como uma contribuição para a segurança e soberania alimentar.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Little is known concerning novel interactions between species that typically interact in their native range but, as a consequence of human activity, are also interacting out of their original distribution under new ecological conditions. Objective: We investigate the interaction between the orange tree and wild boar, both of which share Asian origins and have been introduced to the Americas (i.e. the overseas). Methods: Specifically, we assessed whether i) wild boars consume orange (Citrus sinensis) fruits and seeds in orchards adjacent to a remnant of the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, ii) the orange seeds are viable after passing through boar's digestive tract and iii) whether the orange tree may naturalise in the forest remnant assisted by wild boars. Results: Our camera surveys indicated that wild boar was by far the most frequent consumer of orange fruits (40.5 % of camera trap-days). A considerable proportion of sown orange seeds extracted from fresh boar feces emerged seedlings (27.8 %, N = 386) under controlled greenhouse conditions. Further, 37.6 % of sown seeds (N = 500) in the forest remnant emerged seedlings in July 2015; however, after ~4 years (March 2019) only 9 seedlings survived (i.e. 4.8 %, N = 188). Finally, 52 sweet orange seedlings were found during surveys within the forest remnant which is intensively used by wild boars. This study indicates a high potential of boars to act as effective seed dispersers of the sweet orange. However, harsh competition with native vegetation and the incidence of lethal diseases, which quickly kill sweet orange trees under non-agricultural conditions, could seriously limit orange tree establishment in the forest. Conclusions: Our results have important implications not only because the wild boar could be a vector of potential invasive species, but also because they disperse seeds of some native species (e.g. the queen palm, Syagrus romanzofiana) in defaunated forests, where large native seed dispersers are missing; thus, wild boars could exert critical ecological functions lost due to human activity.


Introducción: Se conoce relativamente poco sobre las llamadas 'interacciones noveles' entre especies que típicamente interactúan en su área de distribución nativa pero que, como consecuencia de la actividad humana, también interactúan fuera de su distribución original bajo nuevas condiciones ecológicas. Objetivo: Investigamos la interacción entre el naranjo y el jabalí, ambos con origen asiático e introducidos en las Américas (es decir, del extranjero). Métodos: Específicamente, evaluamos si i) los jabalíes consumen frutas y semillas del naranjo (Citrus sinensis) en naranjales adyacentes a un parche remanente del bosque atlántico de Brasil, ii) las semillas de naranja son viables tras pasar por el tracto digestivo del jabalí, y iii) si el naranjo puede llegar a naturalizarse en el parche de bosque gracias a los jabalíes. Resultados: Los resultados de nuestro fototrampeo indicaron que el jabalí fue, con mucho, el consumidor más frecuente de las naranjas (40.5 % cámaras trampa-días). Una proporción considerable de semillas de naranjo extraídas de heces de jabalí frescas y sembradas emergieron plántulas bajo condiciones de invernadero controladas (27.8 %, N = 386). Además, del 37.6 % de las semillas sembradas (N = 500) en el parche remanente de bosque emergieron plántulas en julio 2015; sin embargo, después de ~ 4 años (marzo 2019) solo sobrevivieron 9 plántulas (es decir, 4.8 %, N = 188). Finalmente, se encontraron 52 plántulas de naranja dulce durante varias prospecciones dentro del parche de bosque que es utilizado intensivamente por los jabalíes. Este estudio indica un alto potencial de los jabalíes para actuar como dispersores de semillas eficaces del naranjo dulce. Sin embargo, la severa competencia con la abundante vegetación nativa y la incidencia de enfermedades letales, que matan rápidamente los naranjos dulces en condiciones no agrícolas, podrían limitar seriamente el establecimiento de naranjos en el bosque. Conclusiones: Nuestros resultados tienen implicaciones importantes no solo porque el jabalí podría ser un vector de posibles especies de plantas invasoras, sino también porque dispersan semillas de algunas especies nativas (p.e., la palmera reina, Syagrus romanzofiana) en estos bosques defaunados, donde faltan dispersores nativos de semillas de gran tamaño. Por ello, los jabalíes podrían ejercer funciones ecológicas críticas que se han perdido debido a la actividad humana.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate how the surrounding vegetation affects the assemblage of fruit flies. For this, flies were collected in guava orchards with distinct types of surrounding vegetation (exotic pasture, native forest and fruit tree intercropping). The experiment was conducted in Itaporã and Dourados, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Weekly samples were collected from March to April 2015. McPhail traps were baited with 5% hydrolyzed corn protein. Species richness, diversity index and abundance were evaluated for each orchard, as well as the species composition of fruit fly between the environments surrounding the orchard and, finally, the sex ratio. A total of 579 individuals were collected of the species Anastrepha fraterculus, A. montei, A. obliqua, A. sororcula, A. striata, A. turpiniae and A. zenildae. The orchard surrounded by native forest had the highest species richness and Shannon diversity. The species composition differed between environments, with the formation of three distinct groups. The environment surrounding the guava orchard influences the richness, diversity, abundance and sex ratio of fruit flies, indicating that the native forest may provide more resources for the maintenance of these insects.


Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar como a vegetação do entorno dos pomares afeta a assembleia de moscas-das-frutas. Para isto, foram coletadas moscas em pomares de goiabeiras com distintos tipos de vegetação no entorno (pastagens exóticas, mata nativa e fruticultura). O experimento foi conduzido em Itaporã e Dourados, Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. Amostras semanais foram coletadas de março a abril de 2015. As armadilhas McPhail foram iscadas com 5% de proteína hidrolisada de milho. A riqueza de espécies, o índice de diversidade e a abundância foram avaliados para cada pomar, assim como a composição de espécies de moscas-das-frutas entre os ambientes do entorno do pomar e razão sexual. Um total de 579 indivíduos foram coletados das espécies Anastrepha fraterculus, A. montei, A. obliqua, A. sororcula, A. striata, A. turpiniae e A. zenildae. O pomar cercado por mata nativa apresentou maior riqueza de espécies e diversidade de Shannon. A composição das espécies diferiu entre os ambientes, com a formação de três grupos distintos. O ambiente do entorno do pomar de goiabeira influencia a riqueza, diversidade, abundância e razão sexual das moscas-das-frutas, indicando que a mata nativa pode fornecer mais recursos para a manutenção desses insetos.

ABSTRACT

Since the early 1990s, and almost simultaneously, unknown diseases started to be observed in many crops, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. These diseases were predominantly caused by begomoviruses, which were poorly known at that time. Their vector, the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), often reached unprecedented huge populations in agricultural areas. This elicited a serious production crisis worldwide, that caused losses of millions of dollars for farmers in many countries, including the Mesoamerican region. Fortunately, in Costa Rica, some local research centers, with the collaboration of foreign specialists, have been able to study the causes of this phenomenon, in the search for solutions based on solid epidemiological information. In addition to the previously reported native Bemisia tabaci species, New World (NW), two exotic species, -Mediterranean (MED) and Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1)- were found. Moreover, native and exotic bipartite begomoviruses have been detected, especially in common bean, cucurbits, tomato and sweet pepper, as well as the worldwide spread monopartite begomovirus Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV). Based upon biological and ecological knowledge accumulated to date, this review offers a comprehensive overview of the very dynamic ways in which the interactions of the different whiteflies and begomovirus species have expressed in Costa Rica, with emphasis on vegetable pathosystems. Hopefully, the information provided in this paper may allow farmers, extension agents, and researchers involved in vegetable production to develop sound practical responses to current and unforeseen problems regarding whiteflies and their associated viruses.


Desde inicios del decenio de 1990 y de manera casi simultánea, se empezaron a observar afecciones desconocidas en numerosos cultivos, sobre todo en regiones tropicales y subtropicales. Dichas enfermedades eran causadas por begomovirus hasta entonces poco estudiados. Su vector es la mosca blanca Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), de la que no se habían registrado poblaciones tan desmedidas en áreas agrícolas. Ello originó una seria crisis de producción a nivel mundial, con pérdidas millonarias para los agricultores de numerosos países, incluyendo la región de Mesoamérica. Por fortuna, en Costa Rica, algunos centros de investigación, con la colaboración de especialistas extranjeros, han podido profundizar en las causas de este fenómeno, para buscar soluciones fundamentadas en información de carácter epidemiológico. Además de la especie de B. tabaci New World (NW), nativa y previamente conocida, en años recientes han ingresado sendas especies del Mediterráneo (MED) y el Medio Oriente-Asia Menor 1 (MEAM1). Asimismo, se ha detectado la presencia de begomovirus bipartitas, nativos y exóticos, especialmente en frijol común, cucurbitáceas, tomate y chile; además, se detectó el begomovirus monopartito conocido a nivel mundial Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) en tomate. Con base en el conocimiento biológico y ecológico acumulado hasta ahora, en la presente revisión se aporta una panorámica del dinamismo con que se han expresado en Costa Rica las interacciones entre las diferentes especies vectoras y los distintos begomovirus, con énfasis en patosistemas de hortalizas. Se espera que la información aquí presentada permita mejorar el tipo de respuestas prácticas y eficaces de parte de agricultores, extensionistas agrícolas e investigadores involucrados en la producción de hortalizas, frente a problemas actuales o imprevistos.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The coffee cultivation has displaced natural vegetation and its associated biological diversity. The present study describes the diversity of ground-dwelling ants on eight plantations where coffee is grown in the shade (SHD), eight plantations where coffee is grown under unshaded coffee (SUN) and four patches of forest (FOS) in a coffee-growing region of Colombia. The research was conducted in transects composed of 12 sampling stations, each of which employed active collection, pitfall traps and litter sifting. Nine habitat variables were analyzed to characterize each site, and these values were related to the diversity of ants and functional groups. A total of 92 morphospecies were collected. Myrmicinae was the subfamily with the highest representation. The sample coverage presented a deficit of less than 5 %. The rank abundance curves exhibited differences in the ant assemblages. The ant communities found in the forest exhibited greater diversity and a larger number of exclusive species than the communities found in locations of other land uses; the SHD and SUN communities were characterized by 80.3 % and 62.3 %, respectively, of the diversity found in the forest communities. The functional similarity index as adapted for guilds by Sørensen reveals a high degree of similarity in the structure of their ant communities, but less so in their composition. The shaded coffee plantations have a richer and more equitable ant fauna than the exposed coffee plantations, reinforcing the idea that shade cultivation favors the establishment of ant fauna and, consequently, ecological functionality.(AU)


Resumen La investigación sobre los ecosistemas de café ha recibido considerable atención en las últimas décadas. El cultivo de café ha desplazado la vegetación natural y su diversidad biológica asociada. Con el objeto de caracterizar la diversidad específica de hormigas del suelo, identificar los grupos funcionales en dos sistemas cafeteros contrastantes y relacionar esta diversidad con algunas características del hábitat, se muestrearon ocho cafetales con sombra (CCS), ocho a libre exposición (CLE) y cuatro parches de bosque en la zona cafetalera del sur de Colombia. Se trabajó en dos transectos con 12 estaciones de muestreo, en cada una se empleó búsqueda activa, trampa de caída y cernido de horajasca. Se evaluaron nueve variables del hábitat para caracterizar cada sitio y relacionar estos valores con la diversidad de hormigas. Se recolectaron 15 666 individuos en 92 morfoespecies, Myrmicinae fue la subfamilia con mayor representación. La cobertura del muestreo presentó un déficit inferior al 5 %. Las curvas de abundancia relativas, mostraron diferencias en el ensamblaje de hormigas. Los bosques presentaron comunidades de hormigas más diversas que las de los otros usos del suelo y mayor número de especies exclusivas; el CCS mantiene el 80.3 % de la diversidad de los bosques frente al 62.3 % de ésta en CLE. En síntesis, la fauna de hormigas en los cafetales con sombra es más rica y equitativa que en los cultivos a libre exposición, reforzando la idea de que la implementación de la sombra favorece el establecimiento de la fauna de hormigas y, por ende, la funcionalidad ecológica.(AU)

Resumen Los estudios de la araneofauna en los agroecosistemas son cruciales para la implementación de las arañas como agentes potenciales de control biológico de plagas. En este trabajo se analiza la distribución del ensamble de arañas en los microhábitats (follaje, tronco y suelo) de los cultivos de Citrus sinensis, (Rutaceae) de la Provincia de Corrientes, Argentina. Los muestreos se realizaron mensualmente mediante cuatro técnicas de captura: agitación de follaje, tamizado de hojarasca, pitfall y captura manual. En total se obtuvieron 2 160 muestras y 7 194 ejemplares de arañas (2 462 en follaje, 983 en tallo y 3 749 en suelo) pertenecientes a 35 familias y 200 especies de Araneomorphae. Hubo diferencias significativas en la estructura de las comunidades de arañas de los tres microhábitats y entre los meses, según el análisis de similitud (ANOSIM). El follaje presentó mayor diversidad, seguido por el suelo y el tronco. Araneidae, Theridiidae y Salticidae predominaron en el follaje; las especies dominantes fueron: Jessica erythostoma y Cheiracantium inclusum, esta araña es una de las principales depredadoras de las larvas de Phyllocnistis citrella (Lepidoptera) que atacan las hojas de Citrus. En el tronco abundaron: Tetragnathidae, Hersiliidae y Theridiidae, destacándose Iviraiva pachyura, una especie especialista en dicho microhabitat; y Leucauge venusta la cual consideramos que es una especie oportunista, debido a que su abundancia se incrementa notablemente en sitios modificados por el hombre. En el suelo abundaron: Lycosidae, Linyphiidae y Coriniidae; Lycosa erythrognatha fue la especie dominante, seguida de Pardosa plumipedata. El índice de similitud Chao-Jaccard fue mayor entre el follaje y el tronco (J-C = 0.95), asimismo el ordenamiento Escalado Multidimencional no Métrico (NMDS) mostró una clara diferenciación de la composición de especies del suelo con respecto al follaje y al tronco. Además, en el suelo hubo mayor recambio temporal de especies y el método de seriación resultó significativo (z = 3.82, P = 0 .00) por lo tanto hubo una sucesión de especies durante el año de muestreo. Las especies en cada microhabitat probablemente evitan la competencia al utilizar distintas estrategias de caza y recursos ecológicos, además de patrones específicos de distribución temporal. Nuestros resultados sugieren que las modificaciones del ambiente, como en estos cultivos de C. sinensis, tienden a albergar varias poblaciones de arañas que se adaptaron a dicho cambio e interactúan de manera equilibrada en espacio y tiempo.(AU)


Abstract Arachnofauna studies from agroecosystems are crucial for implements spider as biological control agents. In this work we analyze the distribution of spider assemblages at three microhabitats (canopy, tree trunk and soil) in Citrus sinensis orchards (Rutaceae) in the Province of Corrientes, Argentina. Spiders were collected monthly using four sampling techniques: beating foliage, leaf litter sifting, pitfall traps and direct capture by hand. A total of 2 160 samples were examined and 7 194 spiders were collected (2 462 on the canopy, 983 on trunk and 3 749 on the floor) belonging to 34 families and 200 species/ morphospecies of Araneomorphae. There were significant differences among microhabitats and months in the structure of the spider communities, according to analysis of similarity (ANOSIM). The diversity was highest on the canopy, followed by soil and tree trunk. Araneidae, Salticidae and Anyphaenidae were the most abundant taxa in the canopy; the dominant species were Jessica erythostoma and Cheiracanthium inclusum, a predator of the leaf herbivore Phyllocnistis citrella (Lepidoptera) a pest of Citrus spp. The most abundant families on the tree trunk were Tetragnathidae, Hersiliidae and Theridiidae, Iviraiva pachyura was a species specialist in such microhabitat; and Leucauge venusta was an opportunistic species, because their abundance increaseds markedly in anthropic environments that modified by man. The most abundant families on the floor were Lycosidae, Linyphiidae and Coriniidae. In this habitat, Lycosa erythrognatha and Pardosa plumipedata were dominant species. The Chao-Jaccard similarity index was highest between the canopy and trunk (J-C = 0.95), likewise ordination by nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) revealed strong differentiation between assemblages of soil spiders and canopy and trunk spiders. Also, on the soil the temporary replacement of species was greater and the seriation method was significant (z = 3.82, P = 0.00) therefore there was a succession of species during the year. The different species in each microhabitat probably avoided competition by using different hunting strategies and different ecological resources, in addition to specific patterns of temporal distribution. Our results suggest that anthropic environments, such as in Citrus orchards, tend to harbor populations of spiders able to adapt to those environments and interact in a balanced way in space and time.(AU)

Abstract The water quality is related to the hydrologic and limnologic properties of ground and surface water, and significant efforts have been made to monitor water sources to understand the effects of land use changes in agricultural areas, with significant socioeconomic activities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the qualitative aspects of surface water in subbasins related to land use. Samples were analyzed in terms of physical and chemical parameters on monthly discrete water quality sampling in four representative sites at first order subbasin streams, located at the Polo Regional Centro Norte, Pindorama County, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The land use classification was made by visual detection technique in a multispectral satellite data obtained from LandSat8- spectral bands of the OLI sensor. The watershed was classified into major land cover/use classes and overlay maps generated in ArcGIS 10 indicated a significant shift from natural vegetation to agriculture activities. Water quality monitoring was according to the brazilian protocol and the results were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA). The values obtained differ significantly at each sampling point - subbasins, reflecting the effects of land use on water quality. Soil conservation management is important to optimize soil use in order to contribute to the control of water pollution and the formulation of a public policy is necessary for the conservation of water and soil resources.


Resumo A qualidade da água está relacionada com as propriedades hidrológicas e limnológicas das águas subterrâneas e superficiais, e esforços significativos devem ser realizados para monitorar as nascentes no intuito de compreender os efeitos das mudanças no uso da terra em áreas agrícolas, com atividades socioeconômicas significativas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os aspectos qualitativos das águas superficiais de bacias hidrográficas e correlacionar com o uso do solo. As amostras foram analisadas em termos dos parâmetros físicos e químicos na amostragem mensal discreta da qualidade da água, em quatro locais representativos de nascentes em microbacias de primeira ordem, localizadas no Polo Regional Centro Norte, Pindorama, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. A classificação do uso do solo foi feita por técnica de detecção visual em uma imagem multiespectral de satélite LandSat8- bandas espectrais, sensor OLI. O uso do solo foi classificado nas principais classes de uso e os mapas de sobreposição gerados no ArcGIS 10 indicaram uma mudança significativa da vegetação natural para as atividades agrícolas. O monitoramento da qualidade da água foi realizado de acordo com o protocolo brasileiro e os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância (ANOVA). Os valores obtidos diferem significativamente em cada ponto de amostragem, refletindo os efeitos do uso do solo sobre a qualidade da água. A gestão do solo e da água é importante para aperfeiçoar as práticas agrícolas, no intuito de contribuir para o controle da poluição da água e para a formulação de uma política pública necessária para a conservação dos recursos hídricos e do solo.

Resumen En los últimos 50 años, la producción cafetera colombiana ha sufrido una gran transformación de los cultivos tradicionales crecidos a la sombra de los bosques, para derivarlos en vastas extensiones de cafetales de libre exposición al sol. Estos sistemas reducen la biodiversidad nativa y sus servicios ecosistémicos asociados. A su vez, los cafetales de sombrío operan como potenciales refugios de dicha biodiversidad, favoreciendo su dispersión en el paisaje dado que ofrecen hábitat de alta calidad para que los organismos silvestres se muevan a través de los relictos de vegetación natural, es por tanto importante documentar su valor biológico. En Colombia, el departamento del Cauca es el cuarto productor de café y aunque sus cosechas estaban principalmente basadas en el modelo de uso de sombra de árboles sobre cafetos, en los últimos 10 años los cafetales de sol han doblado su extensión en este departamento y casi han equiparado la extensión de los cafetales de sombra. Por lo tanto, es necesario documentar si estos cambios de uso de suelo a escala de paisaje pueden derivar en consecuencias para la biota silvestre que habita estos sistemas productivos. Dadas las anteriores consideraciones, y para probar la importancia biológica de las plantaciones de café, el presente estudio compara el efecto de tres usos del suelo (cafetales de sol, cafetales de sombra y parches de vegetación natural) en términos de la riqueza de especies de hormigas y la abundancia de sus gremios tróficos en el municipio de Caldono entre agosto de 2015 y enero de 2016. Las capturas fueron realizadas con trampas de caída, sacos mini-Winkler y colecta directa. Encontramos que la riqueza de hormigas fue mayor en parches de vegetación natural, seguidos de cafetales de sombra y cafetales de sol. En estos últimos, las hormigas omnívoras generalistas fueron más abundantes, y las hormigas arbóreas que forrajean en el suelo fueron menos abundantes. Por su parte, los cafetales de sombra, pese a pertenecer a un uso del suelo transformado, guardan similitud con algunos parches de vegetación natural. Usando sólo hormigas del estrato más bajo (suelo y sotobosque), nuestros hallazgos confirman que los cafetales de sombra mantienen una parte importante de la diversidad de hormigas de la localidad, mientras que los cafetales de sol ofrecen menor calidad de hábitat para la misma. Por otro lado, pese a que los parches de vegetación natural son tan pequeños y degradados, su conservación representa un valioso patrimonio para la protección de la fauna de hormigas local, albergando una gran cantidad de especies exclusivas.


Abstract In the last 50 years, Colombian coffee production has undergone a great transformation from traditional plantations grown below the forest's shade, to vast extensions of coffee plantations consisting of free exposition to sun. These systems reduce native biodiversity and its associated ecosystem services. Simultaneously, shaded coffee plantations operate as potential shelter of such biodiversity, favoring its dispersal in the landscape, because they offer high-quality habitat for the movement of wild organisms through natural vegetation relicts. Therefore, it is important to document its biological value. In Colombia, Cauca department is the fourth coffee producer and although its cultures were mainly based on the model of using trees' shade on coffee shrubs, in last 10 years, sun coffee plantations have doubled their extension in this department and have almost equated the shaded coffee extension. Thus, it is necessary to document if these land use changes at landscape scale may derivate in consequences for the wild biota dwelling these productive systems. Given the above considerations, and in order to test for the biological importance of coffee plantations, the present study compares the effect of three land uses (sun coffee, shaded coffee and natural vegetation patches; eight of each one) in terms of ants' species richness and the abundance of their trophic guilds at Caldono municipality, between August 2015 and January 2016. Captures were carried out with pitfall traps, mini-Winkler sacs and direct capture. We found that ants' richness was higher in natural vegetation patches, followed by shaded coffee plantations and sun coffee plantations, in these last ones, the omnivore-generalist ants were more abundant, and ground-foraging arboreal ants were less abundant. We found that shaded coffee plantations, despite belonging to a transformed land use, have greater similarity with some natural vegetation patches. Using only ants from the lowest stratum (soil and understory), our findings confirm that shaded coffee plantations maintain an important part of the ant diversity of the locality, while sun coffee plantations offer less habitat quality to it. On the other hand, although natural vegetation patches are so small and degraded, their conservation represent a valuable heritage for the protection of local ants' fauna, harboring a largenumber of exclusive species. ABSTRACT

A characterization and analysis of the production systems of aromatic, medicinal and spice plants (AMSP) was carried out in La Molana, Atrato-Chocó, Colombia throughout the identification of their biophysical, socioeconomic and financial characteristics, in order to propose agroecological alternatives that solve the problems and identified needs in said systems; applying methodologies and evaluation indicators of agricultural systems addressed to sustainable rural development, design, implementation and evaluation of agroforestry arrangements, agroforestry systems accompanied by WOST analysis, and agroforestry planning of productive units (APPU), this information was collected through the application of a focal workshop and semi-structured questionnaires to 40 smallholders. Therefore, eight productive units (UP) with four plots and four rooftop, which was characterized throughout a simple random sampling without replacement. The results indicate that these smallholders destine 15.6 ha to AMSP production, from which 11 ha are crops structured in plots within native forests and 4.6 ha are destined to crops in rooftops around the houses. The units produce on average, 110 units (bunches) per week, which are offered to informal vendors in the market place of Quibdo-Choco, Colombia with prices which ranged from COP $ 1000 to COP $ 3000 according to plant size and species. Likewise, was determined that the economic incomes of the AMSP units depend mainly on the following planted species: Cilantro cimarrón (Eryngium foetidum L.), cimarron (Eryngium foetidum L.), Albahaca (Ocimum basilicum L.) and Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), which are the most economically important species in the study area.

ABSTRACT The microbial composition of different types,in ecosystems (including agro-ecosystems), has been investigated in a rapidly growing number of studies in the past few years. The importance of microorganisms, regarding the maintenance and stability of nutrients in agroecosystems, is a key to maintain the sustainability of a crop. Molecular tools to study microbial communities are possible through many methods such as RISA, DGGE, TGGE, clone libraries, T-RFLP, RAPD, SSCP and more recently NGS (Next-Generation Sequencing). DGGE is widely employed to characterize the diversity and the community dynamics of microorganisms in the environment, making possible to find out specific groups through functional genes, allowing access to data that cannot be obtained by cultural methods. The aim of this paper is to review the functional groups related to agroecosystems and to indicate the critical choice of DNA primers pairs and targeted DNA regions that may be used in PCR-based methods such as the DGGE technique in order to evaluate the microbial communities in a variety of environments.

ABSTRACT Solitary wasps and bees (Hymenoptera) play a key role in ecosystem and agroecosystem functioning. Crops may benefit from biological pest control and pollination carried out by predatory solitary wasps and solitary bees, respectively. Here, we aimed at evaluating the abundance and faunistic compositions of solitary wasps and bees in respect to land-use (pasture, alley cropping, young fallow and old fallow) over an entire year using trap nests in the Brazilian northeastern state of Maranhão. Land-use did not influence the abundance of solitary wasps and bees, however, levels of dominance, abundance and frequency of the species Pachodynerus guadulpensis Saussure, Isodontia sp. 1, Isodontia sp. 2, Trypoxylon nitidum Smith and Megachile cfr. framea Schrottky varied with land-use. The abundance of wasps and bees varied over the period of the year with populations peeking in January (bees), and June and July (wasps). Relative humidity explained most of the variation for the abundance of wasps while temperature explained higher portions of the variance for the abundance of bees. There was an interaction between period of the year and land-use for the abundance of wasps (but not for bees). We concluded that total population abundance of solitary wasps and bees were not affected by the land-use however, levels of dominance, abundance and frequency of some species of these hymenopterans changed according to land-use. Also, relative humidity and temperature were important environmental variables explaining the abundances of wasps and bees.

ABSTRACT

The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are key-organisms for maintenance of plant biodiversity in agroecosystems. There is an increasing interest in changes of the microbiological properties in the rhizosphere by its practical and environmental relevance. This research aimed to evaluate the occurrence of AMF in the establishment of fruits under organic management, and to compare them with an area of ​​native vegetation in semiarid Ceará. Soil samples were collected from 0-10cm layer in June, September and December 2010 in different areas. Number of spores, and diversity of AMF were quantified. The dominance of Glomus spores was confirmed in all the areas.


Os fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA) são microrganismos chave na manutenção da biodiversidade de plantas em agroecossistemas e há o interesse no conhecimento sobre alterações nas propriedades microbiológicas do solo rizosférico pela sua relevância do ponto de vista prático e ecológico. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar a ocorrência de FMA na rizosfera de fruteiras em formação, sob o manejo orgânico, e compará-la com área de vegetação nativa no semiárido cearense. Amostras de solo foram coletadas da camada de 0-10cm em junho, setembro e dezembro de 2010 em áreas distintas nas linhas de plantio de fruteiras irrigadas. As amostras de solo foram submetidas a análises, em que quantificou-se o número de esporos e diversidade de FMA. A dominância de esporos do gênero Glomus foi confirmada na rizosfera das fruteiras e no solo sem interferência de plantas ou sob vegetação natural.
